About

Prof.‬ ‪Yong Chen‬ received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Zhejiang University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1993 and 1996, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2001. He was a Senior Research and Development engineer at 3D Systems Inc., a pioneer in the 3D printing industry, from 2001 to 2006. ‪Prof. Chen joined the University of Southern California in 2006 and was a tenured professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering before joining the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in December 2025. His research focuses on additive manufacturing (3D printing) and related modeling, control, material, and application. He has published nearly 200 scientific papers in refereed journals and conferences, as well as 19 issued and pending U.S. patents. His work has been recognized by over 15 Best/Outstanding Paper Awards in major design and manufacturing conferences and research journals. Other major awards he received include the NSF CAREER Award and USC’s Innovation Commercialization Awards.
