About
Prof. Chen received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Missouri. He earned his master’s and bachelor's degrees from Ningbo University. Before joining HKUST in 2021, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow and then a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri to continue his research. Prof. Chen is interested in developing architected active materials-a form of robotic structures implemented with sensing, actuating, and information processing. He seeks to harvest new ways to design those materials using combined knowledge from geometry, active materials, and information science. He also focuses on a fundamental understanding of their nonstandard mechanics and physics. Prof. Chen is passionate about their engineering applications in structural dynamics, robotics, and human-machine-computer interaction.
